Dave Bagdade is a bluegrass and Celtic musician from Indianapolis, Indiana. He performs as a solo artist and also as a member of The Cousin Brothers, New Trad Ramblers and as part of the Irish Arts Academy of Indianapolis. Within the last few years, he has also played with Diamond Hill Station, the Old Fair & Square Band, Whistle Pig and Mike Beck and Big Eyed Beans from Venus. Dave has performed at venues and festivals throughout the midwest as well as in Mexico, Switzerland and Atlantic Canada. Dave is an accomplished guitarist and mandolinist, and he also plays bass, mandola, octave mandolin, cittern, tenor banjo and lap steel guitar. Dave's latest CD, "History in My Hands," is his first all-bluegrass all-original album, featuring ten tracks written by Dave and one by banjoist Bob Perlstein, who also appears on the album. The record represents Dave’s attempt to put a new spin on traditional bluegrass by writing new material which fits well alongside old classics. The songs on History run the gamut, from wry humor (“Somebody Else’s Problem,” “Hyram Byrum’s County Store” and “Recession Special”) to love and loss (“Bedroom Walls,” “Maybe Someday”) to a one-of-a-kind chance encounter (the title track). The instrumentals are Dave’s “From Rosine to Rosedale,” a bluesy waltz honoring both Bill Monroe and Robert Johnson, and the banjo-driven “Leaving Walnut Valley,” written by Dave’s frequent collaborator Bob Perlstein. The leadoff track and single, “We Can Just Pretend,” a driving Monroe-style number, features Portuguese musician Andre Dal on banjo, making History a truly multi-cultural bluegrass album. Along with Bob and Andre, the album’s performers include some of the Midwest’s finest bluegrass musicians, such as fiddler Greg Moore, banjoists Ron Wedekind and Rich Walter, and the legendary Angus Cohen on bass. Dave's last album, "Rocky Shores of Home," was his first predominantly Celtic release. The disc features five of Dave's original compositions, as well as traditional and contemporary Celtic music, and it was released on February 14, 2010. Dave is also a published author, having written many articles and CD reviews for Bluegrass Music News, Bluegrass Music Profiles, Country Standard Time and other publications. His first book, "A Year in Mudville: An Oral History of Casey Stengel and the Original Mets," is now available in print from createspace.com and amazon.com and as an e-book from Smashwords.com. Dave also now hosts two radio programs, the Kitchen Party Ceilidh (Celtic music) and Rockin' Dave's Roots Roundup (rockabilly, jump blues and western swing), both on WICR in Indianapolis.
